Review of Linux Compatibility

The Huawei E392 is a LTE surfstick for the USB port. The stick has the USB-ID 12d1:1505

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 12d1:1505 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

Although the USB stick is recognized since Ubuntu 12.04 by usb_modeswitch erkannt and can be switched from storage device modus to surf modus versetzt, there is still an open kernel bug that prevents the usage of the Huawei E392 for internet surfing.

If usb_modeswitch is not configured correctly the stick is only recognized as storage device:

usb 1-6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
usb 1-6: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...
scsi2 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usbcore: registered new interface driver usb-storage
USB Mass Storage support registered.
usb-storage: device found at 2
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
usb-storage: device scan complete
scsi 2:0:0:0: CD-ROM HUAWEI Mass Storage 2.31 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
sr1: scsi-1 drive
sr 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr1
sr 2:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 5
ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 1
ISOFS: changing to secondary root
usb 1-6: USB disconnect, address 2
usb 1-6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3
usb 1-6: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
scsi3 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 3
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
usb-storage: device scan complete
scsi 3:0:0:0: CD-ROM HUAWEI Mass Storage 2.31 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
sr1: scsi-1 drive
sr 3:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr1
sr 3:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 5
ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 1
ISOFS: changing to secondary root

But even with correct configuration of usb_modeswitch an internet connection with the E392 is not possible due to the mentioned bug.
