Review of Linux Compatibility

The Huawei E173 is a USB surfstick, that supports mobile internet connections per GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA, and HSUPA.

Depending on the model version and the modus of the surfstick (i.e. USB storage device mode or surfstick modue) several USB IDs have already been identified:

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 12d1:1d35 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 12d1:1c05 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.
Bus 002 Device 011: ID 12d1:1c0b Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 12d1:1446 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

The E173 is fully and automatically supported under Ubuntu 12.04. On can configure the internet connection in the menu “New Mobile Broadband Connection”.

In other distributionen several configuration steps might be necessary to switch the stick into surf modusand to establish the internet connection.

If the switching of the USB sticks into surf mode by usb_modeswitch is not configured correctly, the stick will only be initialized as a USB storage device. In this case the following log messages can be seen:

The switching of the stick into sorf mode is carried out by the program usb-modeswitch, which has to be installed on the Linux distribution:

apt-get install usb-modeswitch usb-modeswitch-data

The switching of the sticks is performed automatically (if the distribution is configured in this way), or has to be done with the following command

usb_modeswitch -Hc "/etc/usb_modeswitch.d/12d1:1c0b"

If configured correctly, the switching into surf modue is shown by the following kernel messages:

The connection to the internet is carried out by the interfaces ttyUSB0, ttyUSB1, and ttyUSB2. These simulate a classical modem device. The devices are created by the programm usbserial, which has to be configured for the E173, e.g. by the following entry in the file /etc/modules

usbserial vendor=0x12d1 product=0x1c05

A configuration file has to be created in the folder /etc/usb_modeswitch.d to achieve an automatic switching of the stick, e.g.

Furthermore, a udev rule has to be defined, which is executed automatically if the stick is plugged in. This udev rule will execute modeswitch with the necessary command option and is configured by /lib/udev/rules.d/40-usb_modeswitch.rules:
