Review of Linux Compatibility

The Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 is often mixed up with the similar looking Logitech Webcam Pro 9000. Unfortunately, the QuickCam Pro 9000 is not fully supported by Linux, hence it can have severe consequences if the two versions are mixed up.

The Logitech Wecam Pro 9000 has the USB ID 046d:0809

Bus 002 Device 004: ID 046d:0809 Logitech, Inc. Webcam Pro 9000

while the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 die USB ID 046d:0990

Bus 005 Device 007: ID 046d:0990 Logitech, Inc.

The QuickCam Pro 9000 has a firmware error. Due to a timing problem the camera runs instable under Linux (see http://www.ideasonboard.org/uvc/#footnote-6″>UVC footnote). The error depends on the hardware setup of the PC and has not necessarily appear at each configuration. Nontheless, it is not recommended to use this webcam with Linux.

The webcam is automatically initialized by the kernel:

usb 5-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7
usb 5-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
Linux video capture interface: v2.00
usbcore: registered new interface driver snd-usb-audio
uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device (046d:0990)
usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo
USB Video Class driver (v0.1.0)

Together with the camera also the microphone will be activated:

   0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0x90440000 irq 21
   1 [U0x46d0x990 ]: USB-Audio - USB Device 0x46d:0x990
USB Device 0x46d:0x990 at usb-0000:00:1d.7-1, high speed

Bought this ‘used’ over two years ago. Always worked flawlessly with all variations of Linux Mint over that time. May not be the best, but it certainly has proved reliable.
