Review of Linux Compatibility

The amount of available low-priced wireless-N routers that also work as gigabit Ethernet swith is quite low. One of them is the TL-WR1043ND by TP-Link, which provides 300Mbps WiFi connection an also has 5 gigabit ports.

Furthermore, it is possible to install Linux on this router by exchanging the installed firmware with a Linux based one, e.g. DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com/). This way the device can be enhanced with additional functions that normally are not available in this price category.

In addition to the DD-WRT web surface the new firmware allows, among other things, the use of OpenVPN. OpenWRT is another firmware version that can be install (https://openwrt.org/), and Tomatoe also supports the device (http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato).

The standard firmware of this access point seems to have problems with the heat load. The router crashes regularly if a client located at a small distance utilizes a large transfer rate via Wifi. The situation can be slightly improved if the router is positioned in a way that allows better heat transfer out of the device (the device should be placed with the ventilation slots upwards. Nonetheless, sporadic crashes can still be observed.
