Review of Linux Compatibility

The Asus X552CL is a 15.6 Inch notebook with nVidia GeForce 710M graphic chipset.
The notebook is supported under Linux, but needs some manual settings.

The integrated WiFi chip bases on a Qualcomm Atheros AR9485:

This chipset is automatically deactivated by the hardware switch, which is located on the notebook’ case. To inhibit this behaviour the option “wapf=1″ has to be added as an option for the module asus_nb_wmi. This can be configured by:

echo "options asus_nb_wmi wapf=1" > /etc/modprobe.d/asus.conf

which stores the option in the asus.conf file. The new options is used for the next boot of the Linux systems.

To use the two included graphic chipsets in parallel, the tool Bumblebee needs to be installed. Under Ubuntu this can be done (since Ubuntu 13.10) by activating the repositories Universe and Multiverse (e.g.m in the settings of the Ubuntu Software Manager).

Afterwards, bumblebee is installed with the command:

sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia primus linux-headers-generic

and is available after a reboot of the system.

Gigabit Ethernet

The internal Gigabit Ethernet is automatically recognized and fully supported:

The kernel module r8169 is used as driver and is automatically loaded by the kernel.
