Review of Linux Compatibility

The Samsung SSD 840 series can also be used with Linux without any difficulties. The model is available with 120 up to 250 GB storage capacity.

The SSD harddisk is recognized by the Linux kernel in the following way:

ata1.00: ATA-9: Samsung SSD 840 Series, DXT07B0Q, max UDMA/133
ata1.00: 234441648 sectors, multi 16: LBA48 NCQ (depth 0/32)
ata1.00: configured for UDMA/133
scsi 0:0:0:0: Direct-Access ATA Samsung SSD 840 DXT0 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] 234441648 512-byte logical blocks: (120 GB/111 GiB)
sd 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0
sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write Protect is off
sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00
sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA

On a freshly installed Ubuntu 12.04 with ext4 fily system the following reading and writing speed was achieved:

The reading speed with usage of cache was approximately 5124 MB/s and 335 MB/s for reading from cache and buffer, respectiveley:

/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads: 10242 MB in 2.00 seconds = 5124.38 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 1004 MB in 3.00 seconds = 334.57 MB/sec

Without cache a speed of 350 and 400 MB/s was achieved:

/dev/sda:
 Timing O_DIRECT cached reads: 704 MB in 2.00 seconds = 351.92 MB/sec
 Timing O_DIRECT disk reads: 1172 MB in 3.00 seconds = 390.40 MB/sec

A writing speed test resulted in approximately 130 MB/s:

1024+0 records in
1024+0 records out
1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 8.45947 s, 127 MB/s
