Review of Linux Compatibility

The TerraTec Grabster AV 350 MX allows video editing via USB 2.0 port. The external box has the USB ID 0ccd:0084

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0ccd:0084 TerraTec Electronic GmbH

and is supported by the Linux kernel since version 2.6.31 (related kernel patch) via the kernel module em28xx.

Ubuntu 12.04, i.e. kernel 3.2, automatically initializes the AV 350 MX. If only the picture is transmitted but sound is missing, the kernel module was started with the wrong parameters. In this case a unloading and reloading with correct parameters enables the sound:

sudo rmmod em28xx
sudo modprobe em28xx card=67

The successfull loading of the kernel module is announced by the kernel in the following way:

usb 1-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7
usb 1-5: New USB device found, idVendor=0ccd, idProduct=0084

The video signal can be postprocessed by different choices of videograbbing programs, e.g. via mplayer:

mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:width=720:height=576:outfmt=uyvy:device=/dev/video0:\
input=0:fps=25:alsa:amode=1:forcechan=2:audiorate=48000:adevice=plughw.1,0:forceaudio:\
immediatemode=0 -ao sdl,alsa

and mencoder

mencoder tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:width=720:height=576:device=/dev/video0:\
input=0:fps=25:alsa:amode=1:forcechan=2:audiorate=48000:adevice=plughw.1,0:\
forceaudio:immediatemode=0 -oac copy -ovc copy -o myvideofile -endpos 00:01:00

Also mtvcgui can be used. It is an mplayer frontend specially created for video grabbing.
