Review of Linux Compatibility

The Logitech C200 is a very low priced Linux compatible USB webcam. The camera has the following technical specification:

  • VGA sensor (640 x 480 Pixel)
  • Videos with up to 30 pictures per second
  • Integrarted mikrophone
  • Manuel focus
  • USB 2.0 connection (1.8m cabel)

The camera is recognized automatically by Linux kernel 3.0.0 (Ubuntu 11.10) after plugging it into the USB 2.0 socket:

[ 1400.080126] usb 2-5: new high speed USB device number 2 using ehci_hcd
[ 1400.346681] uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device (046d:0802)
[ 1400.386536] input: UVC Camera (046d:0802) as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:13.2/usb2/2-5/2-5:1.0/input/input6

The kernel automatically creates the necessary device

I: Bus=0003 Vendor=046d Product=0802 Version=0009
N: Name="UVC Camera (046d:0802)"
P: Phys=usb-0000:00:13.2-5/button
S: Sysfs=/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:13.2/usb2/2-5/2-5:1.0/input/input13
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=kbd event12
B: EV=3
B: KEY=100000 0 0 0 0 0 0

The integrated mikrophone is recognized by Pulse Audio as “Analog Mono Input” und therefore can be used for video conferencing.

If using Skype the source “PulseAudio server (local)” has to be selected to use the micro. As Video Input the camera “UVC Camera (046d:0802) (/dev/video0)” has to be chosen.

  • Ubuntu 11.10 – Linux version 3.0.0-17-generic-pae
