Review of Linux Compatibility

The Linux compatible Gigabit PCI network card D-Link DGE-528T (S/N: F3511B801084) has a very good price-performace ratio and is supported by Linux kernel Versions 2.4, 2.6 and 3.0 out-of-the-box. Furthermore, several cards can be used on one mainboard in parallel. Hence, the card is ideal for firewalls.

Before usage it should be verified that the mainboard supports the PCI 2.2 specification, because the card can not be used on older mainboards which only support PCI 2.1 (or lower).

The card is shipped with manual, driver software, low profile front panel and Wake-on-LAN cable:

The network card uses the Linux kernel module (e.g. Linux 2.6.48) r8169 and is initialized by the kernel in the following way:

    I purchased two of these card for my software router, based on the recommendations here. Unfortunately, revision B of this card (the only one still available) is based on a RealTek chip. I had intentionally strayed away from RealTek because I also had a RealTek onboard NIC (I didn’t want to mix two different realtek chips). Anyway, I’ve had nothing but problems. The onboard NIC still works and one of the two DGE-528T (atleast to the point that I can get an ip address… I haven’t actually tested the throughput). The second NIC (according to lspci) is a “Relay Device Group” and it only nagotiates a T-100 connection (but doesn’t actually TX/RX anything). Oddly, if I remove both network cables from the DGE-528T’s and reboot the system, lspci will report (correctly) all 3 nics. I’ve tried the realtek device driver, but didn’t find the right chip set. I could screw around trying to troubleshoot why it’s not working, but instead I’m going to return them and get some decent intel nics. This website should really avoid promoting these cards for software routers…. buyer beware!

      It is always a mess if companies sell new revisions of hardware with different chipsets under old names.

      To improve the situation a bit, could you please provide the output of “lspci -nvv” for this revision B of the card? And maybe also the relevant part of the “dmesg” output that is produced by the corresponding realtek driver.
      What is the serial number on the packaging of this card in order to be able to distinguish both versions before opening the box?
