The HP Officejet 6500A is a All-in-One device that is available with and without WiFi support. Both versions are fully supported by Linux. (Additionally, a very different but similarly named version HP Officejet 6500 is available).

HP Officejet 6500 e710a-f

The version HP Officejet 6500 e710a-f, has not WiFi support and has to be connected per USB 2.0. This model has the USB ID

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 03f0:5512 Hewlett-Packard

and is supported in Linux by the HPLIP drivers since version 3.11.1.

HP Oficejet 6500 e710n-z

The model with WiFi has the name HP Oficejet 6500 e710n-z and needs a HPLIP driver of version 3.10.9 or higher. This version has the USB ID

Configuration

The HP Linux Imaging and Printing (HPLIP) driver is available as OpenSource and can be downloaded fromhttp://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/files/hplip/.
The downloaded file has to be unpacked and can be installed afterwards by the command

sh hplip-3.11.10.run

After connecting the Officejet 6500A the printer can be configured by the command

hp-setup

The integrated scanner can be used with Sane. the command sane-find-scanner searches for the connected device:

  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [HP], product=0x5512 [Officejet 6500 E710a-f]) at libusb:004:003
  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
  # can't be detected by this program.

  # You may want to run this program as root to find all devices. Once you
  # found the scanner devices, be sure to adjust access permissions as
  # necessary.

Also the integrated card reader is automatically supported:
