Review of Linux Compatibility

The Asus PCE-N53 PCI Express WiFi card has the PCI ID 1814:5592

05:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Ralink corp. Device [1814:5592]

and bases on the Ralink RT5592 chipset.

The card is not automatically supported by the Linux kernel. A Linux driver can be downloaded from the Asus homepage (see http://www.asus.com/Networking/PCEN53/#support_Download_5) but this driver only runs together with a Linux kernel of version 2.6.

To install this driver under Ubuntu, the package build-essential has to be installed first

sudo apt-get install build-essential

Afterwards, the driver can be unpacked, compiled, and installed, i.e.

tar -jxvf DPO_GPL_RT5592STA_LinuxSTA_v2.6.0.0_20120326.tar.bz2
make
make install

The card can currently not be used together with other kernel versions (at least not with severe additional effort). There are some kernel patches available to use the driver together with other kernel version, but this approach needs detailed Linux knowledge and is often not successful. Therefore, it is not recommended to use PCE-N53 together with Linux.
