Review of Linux Compatibility

The Samsung Serie 5 Ultra Touch 540U3C is a Ultrabook with 13,3 Zoll (glare-type) touch display. The Ultrabook supports Linux nearly completely (except for some keybord function keys) and is therefore an ideal plattform for Linux.

The 540U3C Ultrabook has no VGA connector. Instead, an external monitor has to be connected per adapter cable. This cable is not part of the delivery scope of the Ultrabook and has to be ordered separately.

Installation

Secure Boot has to be deactivated in the BIOS before Linux can be installed on this Ultrabook. Due to the fact that Samsung Ultrabooks are equipped with UEFI which might have a firmware bug that can result in unrecoverable bricking of the device, one shall deactivate Secure Boot if Linux will be used on the PC. This is already necessary for booting Linux from a Live-CD or from a USB stick. Even this live mode can destroy the UEFI firmware.

In order to deaktivate Secure Boot one has to access the BIOS by pressing F2 during the boot process (F4 for the Windows recovery modus).

In the BIOS the secure boot can be deactivated and also the support for “CSM OS” has to be set (see screenshots). Additionally, to be able to boot Linux from USB connected media the support of “USB Legathy” has to be activated (this is done by deactivating “Fast BIOS”).

The bootr order has to be adapter to give USB connected devices a higher priority than the internal hard disk.

Ubuntu 12.04 was installed in the Ultrabook

On a newly installed Ubuntu 12.04 with ext4 file system the following transfer rates for reading and writing were achieved:

The reading transfer rate while using cache was approximately 4200 MB/s while reading from cache and 450 MB/s while reading from the buffer:

/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads: 8352 MB in 2.00 seconds = 4180.38 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 1350 MB in 3.00 seconds = 449.81 MB/sec

Without cache the reading transfer rate drops down to 350 and 400 MB/s respectively:

/dev/sda:
 Timing O_DIRECT cached reads: 730 MB in 2.00 seconds = 364.15 MB/sec
 Timing O_DIRECT disk reads: 1304 MB in 3.00 seconds = 434.28 MB/sec

The write speed test resulted in a transfer rate of approximately 350 MB/s:

1073741824 Bytes (1,1 GB) kopiert, 2,99235 s, 359 MB/s

Keyboard function keys

Ubuntu supports some of the keyboard functions keys automatically, but not all. It is possible to control the audio volume and the display brightnes by the corresponding keys. Howeer, the en- and disabling of the wifi chpset is not possible with the keys foreseen for this job. Anyway, the wifi functionality can be controlled by the Ubuntu menu in the same way.

SD card reader

The internal SD card reader is supported and has the USB ID 05e3:0727

Using this laptop under Ubuntu for several years. All components always worked out-of-the-box, including Bluetooth, WiFi, touchscreen, webcam for all distribution versions used so far. Also suspend/resume never caused any issues under Linux.
