Review of Linux Compatibility

The HP Photosmart 5520 e-All-in-One can be connected per USB as well as per WiFi. It has the USB ID 03f0:b111. The device is fully supported by Linux thanks to the HPLIP driver (since version 3.12.6).

The installer supports the following Linux distributions: SUSE Linux (11.4, 12.1), Fedora (15, 16, 17), Linux Mint (8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13), Ubuntu (8.04, 10.04, 10.10, 11.04, 11.10, 12.04), and Debian (5.0, 5.0.1, 5.0.2, 5.0.3, 5.0.4, 5.0.5, 5.0.6, 5.0.7, 5.0.8, 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.0.3, 6.0.4, 6.0.5).

Configuration

The HP Linux Imaging and Printing (HPLIP) drivers are available as OpenSource. If the drivers are not already part of the Linux distribution, they can be downloaded from http://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/files/hplip/.
The downloaded and unpacked driver can be installed by the command

sh hplip-3.12.xx.run

After connecting the HP Photosmart 5520 the printer can be configured by

hp-setup

If the scanner is not recognized by Sane automatically, the following entry might be missing in the file /lib/udev/rules.d/65-libsane.rules. In this case the USB ID of the scanner has to be added:

# Hewlett-Packard Photosmart 5520
ATTRS{idVendor}=="03f0", ATTRS{idProduct}=="b111",
ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

Afterwards, the scanner is detected by Scanimage

device `hpaio:/usb/Photosmart_5520_series?serial=CN2611C2Z005ST' is a
Hewlett-Packard Photosmart_5520_series all-in-one

as well as by sane-find-scanner

found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [HP], product=0xb111 [Photosmart 5520
series]) at libusb:001:005

Further details regarding the installation of the HPLIP driver in Ubuntu can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HpAllInOne.

Furthermore, the scanner can be used under Linux with the commercial scanner driver VueScan.
