Review of Linux Compatibility
The Linux compatible Gigabit PCI network card D-Link DGE-528T (S/N: F3511B801084) has a very good price-performace ratio and is supported by Linux kernel Versions 2.4, 2.6 and 3.0 out-of-the-box. Furthermore, several cards can be used on one mainboard in parallel. Hence, the card is ideal for firewalls.
Before usage it should be verified that the mainboard supports the PCI 2.2 specification, because the card can not be used on older mainboards which only support PCI 2.1 (or lower).
The network card uses the Linux kernel module (e.g. Linux 2.6.48) r8169 and is initialized by the kernel in the following way:
r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded r8169 0000:04:01.0: found PCI INT A -> IRQ 5 r8169 0000:04:01.0: (unregistered net_device): no PCI Express capability r8169 0000:04:01.0: eth0: RTL8169sb/8110sb at 0xf8018800, 84:c9:b2:43:09:fa, XID 10000000 IRQ 5
The DGE-528T has the PCI-ID 1186:4300, can be recognized by the following lspci output:
04:01.0 Ethernet controller: D-Link System Inc DGE-528T Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (rev 10) Subsystem: D-Link System Inc DGE-528T Gigabit Ethernet Adapter Kernel driver in use: r8169
