Review of Linux Compatibility

The Bayer Health Care LLC Contour Next is a medical meter device used to determine blood glucose level. The Contour Next can be connected via USB with a PC and has the USB ID 1a79:7410

Bus 001 Device 012: ID 1a79:7410 Bayer Health Care LLC Contour Next

It is automatically recognized and fully supported by the Linux kernel:

usb 1-9: new full-speed USB device number 9 using xhci_hcd
usb 1-9: New USB device found, idVendor=1a79, idProduct=7410
usb 1-9: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 1-9: Product: Contour NEXT USB
usb 1-9: Manufacturer: Bayer HealthCare LLC
usb 1-9: SerialNumber: 000000000xxxxxxxx
hid-generic 0003:1A79:7410.0007: hiddev0,hidraw4: USB HID v1.11 Device [Bayer HealthCare LLC Contour NEXT USB] on usb-0000:00:14.0-9/input0
usb 1-9: reset full-speed USB device number 9 using xhci_hcd

The device is a HID device and USB mass storage with 128 MB. The internal memory is recognized by the kernel:

usb-storage 1-9:1.1: USB Mass Storage device detected
scsi host8: usb-storage 1-9:1.1
scsi 8:0:0:0: Direct-Access BAYER CONTOUR NEXT USB PQ: 0 ANSI: 2

sd 8:0:0:0: [sde] Attached SCSI removable disk

The list of values cannot be read out from the internal storage without the original Bayer software, because they use Java Native Interface which accesses a Windows DLL. However, there are programs available such as https://github.com/der-b/contour-next or http://sourceforge.net/projects/ggc/ to access the data.

The first one exports the data in a code format, that can be easily used by own scripts:

P|1
R|1|^^^Glucose|135|mg/dL^P||A/M0/T1||201307261051
L|1||N
