and is automatically recognized by by the Linux kernel:

The scanner is supported by sane, which can be installed under Ubuntu by
sudo apt-get install xsane
Afterwards, the scanner will be found by sane:

A scan can be performed by programs like “xsane” or “simple-scan”.
