Review of Linux Compatibility

The HP Deskjet 2542 is an all-in-one device with inkjet printer and scanner. The HP Deskjet 2542 is fully supported under Linux thanks to the HPLIP drivers provided by HP. At least the version 3.13.8 of the HPLIP drivers is necessary in order to fully support the HP Deskjet 2542. Under Ubuntu the needed drivers can be installed via the apt-get package manager:
sudo apt-get install hplip hpijs hplip-gui
Otherwise, the drivers can be downloaded from HPLIP web site. The downloaded files (eventually after unpacking them) can be installed (as root):
sh hplip-3.13.8.run
Under Ubuntu this step is not necessary (because installation is done by the package management system) and one can immediately skip to the configuration step:
sudo hp-setup

Scanner:

The scanner can be used together with XSane, which can be installed under Ubuntu by:
sudo apt-get install xsane
If the scanner is found, one can also scan with the console program
hp-scan
After placing a sheet of paper on the scan unit and presses the scan button on the printer, a file “hpscan001.png” is created in the home directory.
