Review of Linux Compatibility
The HP Officejet 6600 is a All-in-One device with integrated ink color printer and a scanner with a resolution of up to 1.200 ppi. The All-in-One printer can be connected per USB or WiFi and is fully supported by Linux.
As driver the HPLIP-Version 3.12.4 (or higher) has to be used to get full support of the printer.
This driver can be installed in Ubuntu by the package manager apt-get:
sudo apt-get install hplip hpijs hplip-gui
For other distributions it might be necessary to download the driver from the HPLIP page and install it afterwards (unpacking and root authorization might be necessary):
This step is not not necessary in Ubuntu (because it is already carried out by the package management system) and one can directly configure:
After the scanner is activated it can be accessed by the console program
After placing a piece of paper in the scanner and pushing the scan button on the HP 6600 the scan will be copied to the home directory of the user as file “hpscan001.png”.
Furthermore, the scanner can be used with XSane, which can be installed in Ubuntu by:
sudo apt-get install xsane
