Review of Linux Compatibility

The Brother DS-620 is a compact DIN-A4 document scanner, which is ideal for mobile operation due to its small dimensions. The scanner can be connected via USB and is fully supported under Linux. Linux drivers are provided by Brother at for download as DEB and as RPM files.

Additionally, sane has to be installed on the system. Under Ubuntu, this can be achieved by:

sudo apt-get install sane-utils xsane xsane-common

For scanning, one needs Sane installed on the Linux system, which can be achieved under Ubuntu by:

sudo apt-get install sane-utils xsane xsane-common

Afterwards scanning with the DS-620 is possible with xsane or with the simplescan program.

The scanner has a bug in an older firmware version, which causes a repeating reset of the USB connection. This massively reduces the possible transfer rate and hence causes slow scans. If such broken firmware is present in the used DS-620, the following repeating error message should appear in the log file of the Linux system:

usb 2-1.3: reset high-speed USB device number 32 using ehci-pci

In this case a update of the firmware is necessary. The latest firmware version can be found and the Brother homepage. However, the update of the firmware with the downloaded file is only supported under Windows.

The Scanner has the USB ID 04f9:60e0 and is identified by the kernel in the following way:

usb 6-2: new high-speed USB device number 10 using xhci_hcd
