Review of Linux Compatibility

The Edimax EU-4306 is a USB 3.0 adapter, which provides a Gigabit Ethernet connection. The adapter bases on the Asix 88179 chipset, which is supported under Linux since kernel version 3.9 by the kernel module ax88179_178a. This driver is loaded automatically, when the stick is connected:

and creates an additional (eth) network device.

Older kernel versions do not include drivers for the ASIX 88179. However, for such kernels Linux driver can be downloaded from Asix but have to be compiled and installed by hand:

aptitude install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)

make
sudo make install
