Review of Linux Compatibility

The Asus F551CA is a 15.6 Inch notebook, which is fully supported under Linux. However, an up-to-date Linux kernel is needed (at least version 3.14.2), because the touchpad will not support 2-finger-gestures otherwise. If an older kernel version is used the touchpad will only be recognized as standard Elantech touchpad:

⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
    ⎜ ↳ PS/2 Elantech Touchpad id=12 [slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)]
        ↳ Power Button id=6 [slave keyboard (3)]
        ↳ Video Bus id=7 [slave keyboard (3)]
        ↳ Sleep Button id=8 [slave keyboard (3)]
        ↳ USB2.0 HD UVC WebCam id=9 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Asus WMI hotkeys id=10 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=11 [slave keyboard (3)]

and produce the following error message in the system’s log file:

psmouse serio4: elantech: unknown hardware version, aborting...
psmouse serio4: elantech: unknown hardware version, aborting...

WiFi

The WiFi uses the ath9k kernel module as driver. If the WiFi shows problems like constantly loss of WiFi connections, it might help to deactivate the hardware encryption of the chipset:

echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
sudo modprobe -rfv ath9k
sudo modprobe -v ath9k
echo "options asus_nb_wmi wapf=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/asus.conf

After a restart of the Asus F551CA the kernel is automatically loaded with the new options.
