Review of Linux Compatibility

The Acer Aspire E1-510-35204G50MNKK is also available with pre-installed Linpus Linux and hence without the need to bundle the laptop with an unwanted Windows license. However, the installed 32-Bit Linpus Linux supports only a part of the internal memory and comes without any graphical desktop environment.

The pre-installed BIOS supports only EFI. There is an updated Firmware available at the Acer support website, but this update can only be installed under Windows 8.

If an Linux distribution is installed on the Acer Aspire 510, the internal screen is not supported for some of them. In this case, the installation should be carried out with an externally connected monitor.

The internal screen is automatically supported since Ubuntu 14.04. However, setting the screen’s brightness does not work automatically. To support this feature, the file /etc/default/grub has to be changed. The file needs to be changed:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

has to be changed into

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor"

Afterwards, the modified file needs to be saved and the new grub configuration is activated by:

sudo update-grub

After a reboot of the notebooks the background lightning is activated and changeable.

If this does not work the line

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux"

might also help.
