Review of Linux Compatibility

The ZyXEL NWD2705 is a WiFi USB stick with the USB ID 0586:3421

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0586:3421 ZyXEL Communications Corp.

which bases on the Ralink RT3573 chipset. A driver for this chipset is provided in the Linux kernel by the rt2800usb kernel module. The support for the RT3537 chipset is included since kernel version 3.12 (see related kernel patch).

Similar to many mobile surf sticks, the ZyXEL NWD2705 is equipped with internal memory and can be recognized by the Linux system as mass storage device with USB ID 148f:2878

Bus 002 Device 002: ID 148f:2878 Ralink Technology, Corp

In this case the following log message is shown by the kernel:

usb 1-1: new high-speed USB device number 5 using ehci-pci
usb 1-1: New USB device found, idVendor=148f, idProduct=2878
usb 1-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
usb 1-1: Product: NWD2705
usb 1-1: Manufacturer: ZyXEL
scsi7 : usb-storage 1-1:1.0
scsi 7:0:0:0: CD-ROM            NWD2705  Autorun          0.01 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0 CCS
sr1: scsi3-mmc drive: 52x/52x cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
sr 7:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr1
sr 7:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 5
ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 1
ISOFS: changing to secondary root

The NWD2705 can not be used under Linux as WiFi stick in this mass storage device mode. Instead, the stick has to be switched via usb_modeswitch into WiFi modus. (The stick shows the USB ID 0586:3421 in WiFi mode).

Until now the corresponding “MessageContent” to switch the stick into WiFi mode is not known. The following commend in the file /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/148f:2878 seems to be not successful:

########################################################
# ZyXel NWD2705

DefaultVendor= 0x148f
DefaultProduct=0x2878

TargetVendor=  0x0586
TargetProduct= 0x3421

CheckSuccess=20
MessageContent="55534243908ecd89000000000000061b000000020000000000000000000000"

The usb_modeswitch command can then be executed on command line:

sudo usb_modeswitch -v 0x148f -p 0x2878 -w 100 -n -W -D

This command is however not successful.
