Review of Linux Compatibility
The Asus USB-AC56 is a WiFi stick for the USB 3.0 port and has the USB ID 0b05:17d2
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0b05:17d2 ASUSTek Computer, Inc.
The USB-AC56 bases on the Realtek RTL8812AU chipset an supports WiFi connectection according to IEEE 802.11ac standard. Until now there is no automatic support of the USB-AC56 in the Linux kernel.
Edimax provides a Linux driver in version 4.2.2 for download. This driver has to be compiled and installed by hand, which as a prerequisite needs under Ubuntu the installation of the build-essentials:
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential
Afterwards, the downloaded driver has to be unpacked and the kernel module 8812au can be compiled:
cd ~/Downloads/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux-master make sudo make install
The compiled kernel module 8812au, which is compiled by these commands, can be loaded into the kernel by:
sudo modprobe 8812au
The version 4.2.2 of this driver supports only a very limited WiFi coverage. The newer version 4.2.5, which can be downlaoded at the Asus homepage achieves a higher WiFi range but is only compatible to the kernel versionen 2.6.18 to 3.10. A modified version of the Asus 4.2.5 driver can be found at https://github.com/abperiasamy/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux, which is compatible to Linux kernel versions up to 3.13.
