Review of Linux Compatibility
The WMP54GS PCI WiFi card from Linksys (Cisco) has the PCI ID 14e4:4318. There are two versions of the card available:
02:03.0 Network controller : Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4318] (rev 02) Subsystem: Dell Wireless 1370 WLAN Mini-PCI Card [1028:0005] Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 64, IRQ 17 Memory at dfbfe000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=8K] Kernel driver in use: b43-pci-bridge
09:01.0 Network controller : Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4318] (rev 02) Subsystem: Linksys WMP54GS v1.1 802.11g Wireless-G PCI Adapter with SpeedBooster [1737:0042] Kernel driver in use: b43-pci-bridge Kernel modules: ssb
Both cards are supported under Linux by the kernel module b43, but needs an additional firmware file. Without the firmware the following error message is shown by the Linux kernel:
b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode15.fw" not found b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43-open/ucode15.fw" not found b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware and download the correct firmware for this driver version. Please carefully read all instructions on this website. b43-phy0: Loading firmware version 478.104 (2008-07-01 00:50:23) b43-phy0: Radio hardware status changed to DISABLED
The firmware file can be installed by the tool “Additional drivers” under Ubuntu: “System > Administration > Additional Drivers”, in which the Broadcom drivers need to be activated.
