Review of Linux Compatibility

The Samsung SE-506BB/TSBD is an external Blu-ray writer, which uses a single USB 2.0 cable for power and data transfer. The writer can write triple layer and read quad layer media.

The following writing speeds are supported:

  • 6X BD-R
  • 6X BD-R dual layer
  • 4X BD-R triple layer
  • 2X BD-RE single, dual, or triple layer
  • 8X DVD±R
  • 5X DVD-RAM
  • 6X DVD+R dual layer
  • 6X DVD-R dual layer
  • 8X DVD+RW
  • 6X DVD-RW

Supported maximum reading speeds are

  • 6X BD-ROM dual layer
  • 6 x BD-R/-RE single layer and dual layer
  • 5 x BD-R/-RE triple and quad layer
  • 8 x DVD +R/-R, +RW/ -RW
  • 6 x DVD +R/-R dual layer
  • 5 x DVD RAM
  • 24X CD-ROM
  • 24X CD-RW

The SE-506BB/TSBD has the USB ID 0e8d:1956

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0e8d:1956 MediaTek Inc.

and is automatically recognized by the Linux kernel:

usb 2-2: new high-speed USB device number 5 using ehci_hcd
usb 2-2: New USB device found, idVendor=0e8d, idProduct=1956
usb 2-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 2-2: Product: MT1956
usb 2-2: Manufacturer: MediaTek Inc
usb 2-2: SerialNumber:
scsi 6:0:0:0: CD-ROM TSSTcorp BDDVDW SE-506BB TS01 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0
sr 6:0:0:0: [sr1] scsi3-mmc drive: 0x/24x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
sr 6:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr1
sr 6:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 5

Unfortunately, the MediaTek USB controller that is used in the device has not been programmed with a serial number (see last line of lsusb output):

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0e8d:1956 MediaTek Inc.
Device Descriptor:
bLength 18
bDescriptorType 1
bcdUSB 2.00
bDeviceClass 0 (Defined at Interface level)
bDeviceSubClass 0
bDeviceProtocol 0
bMaxPacketSize0 64
idVendor 0x0e8d MediaTek Inc.
idProduct 0x1956
bcdDevice 0.00
iManufacturer 1 MediaTek Inc
iProduct 2 MT1956
iSerial 3 ?????????

Under certain situations this missing serial number can lead to problems under Linux, e.g., if more than one SE-506BB/TSBD is used in parallel. Furthermore, some writer programs can not handle the device if a serial number is missing.
