Review of Linux Compatibility

The LG BH16NS40 is an internal Blu-ray writer

  • writing: 12x BD-R DL, 8x BD-RE(DL)
  • 16x DVD±R, 5x DVD-RAM, 8x DVD±R DL, 48x CD-R
  • reading: 12x BD, 16x DVD, 5x DVD-RAM, 48x CD, SATA

and is automatically supported under Linux (at least since Ubuntu 12.04).

Several Linux users reported that the writing process of the BH16NS40 was interrupted regurlarly. E.g., K3B shows the following error:

Errno: 5 (Input/output error), write_g1 scsi sendcmd: no error

/usr/bin/wodim: fifo had 1436 puts and 1246 gets.
/usr/bin/wodim: fifo was 0 times empty and 1211 times full, min fill was 91%.

This problem can be solved by using the tool cdrecord instead wodim. To exchange the writing tool under Ubuntu the wiiter programs needs to be deinstalled:

sudo apt-get remove k3b
sudo apt-get remove brasero
sudo apt-get remove wodim

Afterwards, cdrecord can be installed and the writer programs can be re-installed:

sudo apt-get install cdrecord
sudo apt-get install k3b
sudo apt-get install brasero
sudo apt-get install k3b-i18n

The drive ca be identified by the following dmesg output:

ata2.00: configured for UDMA/100
