Review of Linux Compatibility

The Canon Pixma iP4950 is supported under Linux, although the installation is a bit cumbersome. A instruction manual for Linux is available at the Canon homepage.

Linux Drivers for Fedora (beginning from version 14), openSUSE (beginning from version 11.4) and Ubuntu (beginning from version 10.10) are available.

For Ubuntu the package cnijfilter-ip4900series-3.60-x-deb.tar.gz has to be downloaded, which can be found at the asian Canon homepage at http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/contents/ASIA/EN/0100396602.html.

The package has to be unpacked after downloading:

tar zxvf cnijfilter-ip4900series-3.60-x-deb.tar.gz
cd cnijfilter-ip4900series-3.60-x-deb

and the included installer needs to be started:

sudo ./install.sh

Unfortunately, the Linux printer driver do not support printing of CDs or DVDs. This is currently only possible with the commercially availabe Turbo-Print driver ttp://www.zedonet.com/de_p_turboprint_driver.phtml?printer=Canon_PIXMA_iP4950.
