Review of Linux Compatibility

The Lenovo IdeaPad S206 is a notebook with 11,6 inch display and limited hardware: the battery of the S206 can not be exchanged and the laptop has no Ethernet port.

The inlcuded hardware components are supported by Linux, however, the WiFi chipset needs manual configuration (Ubuntu 12.10).

The WiFi chipset bases on Broadcom:

03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4727] (rev 01)
	Subsystem: Broadcom Corporation Device [14e4:0587]
	Kernel driver in use: wl

and is initialized by the Linux kernel with the following log message:

eth0: Broadcom BCM4727 802.11 Hybrid Wireless Controller 5.100.82.38

The kernel module “wl” is needed as a driver for the WiFi chipset, but some distributions automatically load the module “bcma”, which does not support the BCM4727. Therefore, the bcma driver needs to be unloaded:

sudo modprobe rf bcma brcmsmac

and the kernel modul “wl” has to be loaded instead:

sudo modprobe wl

This driver can be found as part of the Station Wireless Driver (STA) and can be installed, e.g., under Ubuntu by the restricted-manager.

The following hardware components of the notebook are recognized by the Linux kernel:
