Review of Linux Compatibility
The Trendnet TEW-664UB is a USB WiFi adapter with transmission rates up to 300 Mbps according to 802.11n standard. The stick is available in two versions:
Version V1 – 148f:2870
The version V1 has the USB-ID 148f:2870
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 148f:2870 Ralink Technology, Corp.
and bases on the Ralink RT2870 chipset. The stick is fully and automatically supported by the Linux kernel module rt2800usb (e.g. since Ubuntu 12.04).
Version V2.0r – 20f4:664b
Also a newer version of the TEW-664UB is available (v2.0r). This version has the USB ID 20f4:664b:
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 20f4:664b TRENDnet
and bases on the Realtek RTL8192DU chipset. This version of the TEW-664UB is not automatically recognized by the Linux-Kernel.
However, two options exist:
1) The source code of a Linux driver is provided by Realtek for download. One has to download the driver and compile it per hand.
2) on uses the latest version of the kernel module rtl8192du from its GIT repository and compiles it per hand:
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-generic git git clone https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8192du.git cd rtl8192du make sudo make install sudo modprobe 8192du
