Review of Linux Compatibility

The Trendnet TEW-649UB is a 802.11n WiFi adapter and bases on the Realtek RTL8191SU chipset. The USB stick has the USB ID 0bda:8172

Bus 001 Device 006: ID 0bda:8172 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8191S WLAN Adapter

The chipset is supported from the standard Linux kernel by the kernel module rtl819x (e.g. since Ubuntu 10.10). However, the kernel needs a firmware file to access the TEW-649UB. If this file is missing loading of the kernel module will fail with the following error message:

rtl819xU:FirmwareDownload92S(): failed with TCR-Status: a
rtl819xU:ERR!!! _rtl8192_up(): initialization is failed!

In this case the firmware file is not present at /lib/firmware/RTL8192SU/. This can be solved by :

sudo mkdir /lib/firmware/RTL8192SU/
cd /lib/firmware/RTL8192SU/
sudo wget

Alternatively on can use the kernel module rtl8192se. However, this module needs to be compiled per hand:

tar -zxvf rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1012.2009.tar.gz
cd rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1012.2009
sudo make install
