Review of Linux Compatibility
The Trendnet TEW-624UB is a USB WiFi adpater which supports wireless connections according to IEEE 802.11n standard. The stick exists in four different versions, all sold under the name TEW-624UB. Each version uses a different chipset and has shows a different Linux compatibility.
Version A1: 1286:2006
The version A1 has the USB ID 1286:2006
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0836:7100 NetGear, Inc. WN121T RangeMax Next Wireless-N [Marvell TopDog]
and bases on the Marvell 88W8362 chipsatz. There is no Linux driver for this version. As a less-than-ideal solution on can use ndiswrapper together with the Windows drivers to access the stick under Linux.
Version B1: 148f:2870
The version B1 of the TEW-624UB has the USB-ID 148f:2870
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 148f:2870 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT2870 Wireless Adapter
and uses the Ralink RT2870 chipset. This chipset is automatically supported under Linux by the kernel module rt2800usb.
Version C1: 0bda:8174
The third version of the TEW-624UB is recognized by its USB-ID 0bda:8174:
0BDA:8174 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8192SU 802.11n WLAN Adapter
This version bases on the Realtek RTL8192SU chipset. This chipset is currently supported by the kernel module r8712u from the rtl819x driver package. However, the full and stable support of this chipset is still in development.
Version D1: 20f4:624d
The version D1 has the USB-ID 20f4:624d and uses the Realtek RTL8192CU chipset. This chipset is supported by the Linux kernel module rtl8192cu. Alternatively, on can use the Linux drivers provided at the Realtek homepage. However, the Realtek driver has be compiled from its source code per hand.
