Review of Linux Compatibility

The Digitus DN-7053-2 is a USB WiFi adapter which supports the IEEE 802.11n standard. The stick has the USB ID 0bda:8172

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0bda:8172 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8191S WLAN Adapter

and bases on the Realtek RTL8191S chipset. The stick is supported under Linux at least since Kernel version 2.6.32 and can therefore be used e.g. since Ubuntu 10.10. However, the kernel module for the DN-7053-2 needs a firmware file. Otherwise the loading of the kernel module will fail with the following error message:

rtl819xU:FirmwareDownload92S(): failed with TCR-Status: a
rtl819xU:ERR!!! _rtl8192_up(): initialization is failed!

If the firmware file was not already included in the Linux distribution it can be downloaded from:

sudo mkdir /lib/firmware/RTL8192SU/
cd /lib/firmware/RTL8192SU/
sudo wget http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/kernel/dists/trunk/firmware-nonfree/realtek/RTL8192SU/rtl8192sfw.bin

Alternatively, the latest version of the kernel module can be compiled and installed from its source, e.g. by:

wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/33927923/rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1012.2009.tar.gz
tar -zxvf rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1012.2009.tar.gz
cd rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1012.2009
make
sudo make install
