Review of Linux Compatibility

The Baofeng UV-5R is a ham two way radio hand held transceiver which can be programmed via a USB cable. The UV-5R can also be programmed under Linux (e.g. Ubuntu 12.04, Fedora 15).

If connected to the Linux PC via the USB cable the device will be recognized automatically:

usb 2-1.2: new full-speed USB device number 38 using ehci_hcd
USB Serial support registered for pl2303
pl2303 2-1.2:1.0: pl2303 converter detected
usb 2-1.2: pl2303 converter now attached to ttyUSB0
usbcore: registered new interface driver pl2303
pl2303: Prolific PL2303 USB to serial adaptor driver

and the device /dev/ttyUSB0 will be created. Software like CHIRP can be used to program the transceiver.

Under Ubuntu it might be necessary to use the latest version of CHIRP from its web site, because the version 0.1 which is distributed via the Ubuntu repositories does not support the UV-5R. In such a case the downloaded version can be installed via

sudo apt-get install python-serial
sudo apt-get install python-libxml
tar zxvf chirp-0.3.0.tar.gz
cd chirp-0.3.0/
./chirpw
