Review of Linux Compatibility
The TBS 5980 Q-Box CI is an extern CI TV box with DVB-S2 tuner and is connected via USB to the PC. It has a DVB-CI (common interface) for watching PayTV. The device has the USB ID 734c:5980
Bus 001 Device 009: ID 734c:5980 TBS Technologies China
The necessary drivers are open source (GPLv2) and are frequently updated. The Linux drivers can be found at http://www.tbsdtv.com/download/#tbs5980. Furthermore, the Q-Box needs the closed source firmware file dvb-usb-tbsqbox-id5980.fw in /lib/firmware.
The driver will load with the following dmesg output:
usb 1-7: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 9 usb 1-7: New USB device found, idVendor=734c, idProduct=5980 usb 1-7: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 usb 1-7: Product: DVBS2BOX usb 1-7: Manufacturer: TBS-Tech dvb-usb: found a 'TBS Qbox DVB-S2 CI USB2.0' in cold state, will try to load a firmware dvb-usb: downloading firmware from file 'dvb-usb-tbsqbox-id5980.fw' tbsqbox2ci: start downloading TBSQBOX2CI firmware dvb-usb: found a 'TBS Qbox DVB-S2 CI USB2.0' in warm state. dvb-usb: will pass the complete MPEG2 transport stream to the software demuxer. The TBS 5980 was tested with a smit viaccess acs 4.1 but the driver doen’t work fine(without cam inserted it works perfect). The following programs were tested together with the Q-Box showing the listed results:
- VDR: produces timeout and frequently resets the CI slot.
- kaffeine: produces timeouts and shows no picture
- dvblast: the same problem as vdr. Continuously resets the CI slot with message
dvb_ca adapter 0: DVB CAM detected and initialised successfully tbsqbox2ci: CI disabled. tbsqbox2ci: CI enabled. dvb_ca adapter 0: DVB CAM detected and initialised successfully"
Furthermore, the TBS 5980 shows some tuning problems under Linux.
