Review of Linux Compatibility

Unfortuantely MSI sells several DVB-T USB sticks under the name of “MSI DigiVox Mini II V3.0″, and only the version with the AF9015 chipset is supported without hassles under Linux. It is not possible to distinguish the different types of stick while purchasing it, only the USB ID provides the necessary information to distinguish the sticks. The Linux supported version has the USB-ID 15a4:9016

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 15a4:9016 Afatech Technologies, Inc. AF9015 DVB-T USB2.0 stick

The other versions of the stick have one of the following USB IDs:

Bus 007 Device 002: ID 1d19:1102 Dexatek Technology Ltd. DK mini DVB-T Dongle
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 1d19:1101

The version 15a4:9016 is supported at least since Ubuntu-Version 8.10 automatically. Only the firmware files for the DVB-T stick have to be installed. These files are part of Ubuntu’s linux-firmware-nonfree package which can be installed by:

sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree

If the firmware files are not provided by the used Linux distribution they can be downloaded in the following way:

wget http://www.otit.fi/~crope/v4l-dvb/af9015/af9015_firmware_cutter/firmware_files/4.95.0/dvb-usb-af9015.fw

and have to be copied to /lib/firmware afterwards

sudo cp dvb-usb-af9015.fw /lib/firmware/

Afterwards, the driver loads automatically if the USB stick is plugged in:

dvb-usb: found a 'Afatech AF9015 DVB-T USB2.0 stick' in warm state.
DVB: registering new adapter (Afatech AF9015 DVB-T USB2.0 stick)
af9013: firmware version:4.95.0
DVB: registering adapter 0 frontend 0 (Afatech AF9013 DVB-T)...
dvb-usb: Afatech AF9015 DVB-T USB2.0 stick successfully initialized and connected.
usbcore: registered new interface driver dvb_usb_af9015

The driver can also be compiled per hand in the following way:

hg clone http://linuxtv.org/hg/~anttip/af9015/
cd af9015
make

The configuration of the remote which is provided together with the MSI DigiVox Mini II V3.0 is explained at http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/MSI_DigiVox_mini_II_V3.0 erklärt.
