Review of Linux Compatibility

The Digitus DA-70156 is a converter that allows connecting a serail device on an USB 2.0 port. The converter has the USB ID 0403:6001

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0403:6001 Future Technology Devices International, Ltd FT232 USB-Serial (UART) IC

The necessary driver to use this converter (i.e. the Linux kernel module ftdi_sio) is part of the standard Linux kernel at least since version 3.0.0-19 (i.e. already included in Ubuntu 11.10). The driver can also be downloaded from the following address: http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm.

The kernel initiates the device as soon as it is plugged into the USB port:

usb 8-2: new full-speed USB device number 2 using uhci_hcd
USB Serial support registered for FTDI USB Serial Device
ftdi_sio 8-2:1.0: FTDI USB Serial Device converter detected
usb 8-2: Detected FT232RL
usb 8-2: Number of endpoints 2
usb 8-2: Endpoint 1 MaxPacketSize 64
usb 8-2: Endpoint 2 MaxPacketSize 64
usb 8-2: Setting MaxPacketSize 64
usb 8-2: FTDI USB Serial Device converter now attached to ttyUSB1
usbcore: registered new interface driver ftdi_sio
ftdi_sio: v1.6.0:USB FTDI Serial Converters Driver

After loading of the driver the kernel creates the additional device /dev/ttyUSB1, which is used to establish the communication with the device connected to the additional serial port.
