Review of Linux Compatibility
The PCI-Express network card TP-Link TL-WN781ND exists in two different versions (V1 and V2), which both use the same Atheros AR9485 chipset and are both fully supported by Linux (e.g. Ubuntu 10.10, Feodora 15, openSUSE 11.4).
The version V1 has the PCI ID 168c:002b and can be distinguished by the labeling Rev:1.0 or REV:1.0sp1 printed on the card. The version V2 has the PCI ID 168c:0032 and is labeled with the text Rev:1.0sp2 or Rev:2.0.
Version V1 (168c:002b)
Version V1 is recognized by the kernel in the following way:
02:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01) Subsystem: Atheros Communications Inc. Device 30a1 Kernel driver in use: ath9k
The card uses the kernel module ath9k which will be loaded automatically:
ath9k 0000:01:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16 ath9k 0000:01:00.0: setting latency timer to 64 ieee80211 phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'ath9k_rate_control' Registered led device: ath9k-phy0
In addition some other modules are necessary tu utilize the ath9k:
ath9k 11828 0 mac80211 29370 1 ath9k ath9k_common 1351 1 ath9k ath9k_hw 32307 2 ath9k,ath9k_common ath 2373 2 ath9k,ath9k_hw cfg80211 17528 3 ath9k,mac80211,ath
Version V2.2 (168c:3118)
The version V2.2 of the card bases on the Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 chipset:
02:00.0 Network controller : Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter [168c:0032] (rev 01) Subsystem: Qualcomm Atheros Device [168c:3118] Kernel driver in use: ath9k
This version of the TL-WN781ND is automatically recognized by the kernel and supported by the ath9k kernel module (e.g. Ubuntu 14.04, Debian 7.5):
ath: EEPROM regdomain: 0x21 ath: EEPROM indicates we should expect a direct regpair map ath: Country alpha2 being used: AU ath: Regpair used: 0x21 ieee80211 phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'minstrel_ht' ieee80211 phy0: Atheros AR9485 Rev:1 mem=0xf8880000, irq=16
