Review of Linux Compatibility

The SkyStar 2 eXpress HD is a PCI-Express card from TechniSat and is equipped with a DVB-S2-HDTV receiver. It is a so called budget card which means that the MPEG decoding is not performed by the card but instead by the CPU of the PC.

The card has the PCI ID 1131:7160 and is recognized by the kernel in the following way:

0000:02:00.0 Multimedia controller [0480]: Philips Semiconductors SAA7160 [1131:7160] (rev 03)
Subsystem: Device 1ae4:0700
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 11
Memory at fd900000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M]
Capabilities: [40] MSI: Enable- Count=1/32 Maskable- 64bit+
Capabilities: [50] Express Endpoint, MSI 00
Capabilities: [74] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [80] Vendor Specific Information: Len=50
Capabilities: [100] Vendor Specific Information: ID=0000 Rev=0 Len=088

The SkyStar 2 Express HD is accessed via the kernel module saa716x_budget.

If the kernel module is not included in the used Linux distribution (e.g. Ubuntu 12.10), the driver can be installed via hg:

hg clone

Code compilation and driver installation is started by :

cd media_build_experimental
make download
make untar
sudo make install

Eventually, it might be necessary to install Proc-ProcessTable before the compilation of the saa716x_budget kernel module can be carried out:

wget -P ~/Downloads/ ""
cd ~/Downloads/
tar xfvz Proc-ProcessTable-0.47.tar.gz
cd ~/Downloads/Proc-ProcessTable-0.47
perl Makefile.PL
make test
sudo make install
