Review of Linux Compatibility

The Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H is a ATX mainboard with socket 1155. The board uses the Intel Z77 Express chipset with Intel GMA HD grahic. Furthermore, the mainboard has the following characteristics:

  • USB 3.0
  • Gigabit LAN
  • HD sound
  • 4x DDR3-RAM
  • 2x SATA 6Gb/s
  • 4x SATA 3Gb/s
  • 2x eSATA 6Gb/s
  • 1x mSATA 3Gb/s

The board is supported by Linux distributions (e.g. since Ubuntu 12.04).

Sound

The sound works out of the box with newer kernels, even the rear green jack is supported. This is true for Linux kernel 3.9.5 on Gentoo or Siduction.

But there are problems with the used audio controller for older kernels (bug for Linux kernel version 3.4.0):

The audio output does not work out-of-the-box (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/996245). The problem can be solved by using the Realtek original driver: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Network

To use the ethernet network, the kernel module ‘alx’ is needed. This module has to be build by hand (kernel backports, compat-drivers, driver: alx)

    BIOS updates come in exe format. Need version F18+ of the BIOS to get sound working on Ubuntu 14.10. Gigabyte goes so far to say “Due to different Linux support condition provided by chipset vendors, please download Linux driver from chipset vendors’ website or 3rd party website.”
